- Samuel D. Southern, who co-founded ATCO’s initial business and continued to make a valuable contribution to the Company throughout his life, passed away on March 22, 1990. He was 80 years old.
- ATCO supplied a 3,000-person camp for the construction of the Hibernia Oil Project platform.
- ATCO Enterprises’ plant in Budapest, Hungary officially opened to supply workforce housing to eastern European markets.
- The 1,000 MW Barking Power Station in east London was commissioned.
- The Australian subsidiary of CU Power International (now ATCO Power) commenced construction of a 180 MW cogeneration plant in Adelaide, Australia.
- ATCO Structures provided housing for NATO forces in Bosnia and Croatia and received additional orders for accommodation of mining workers in Chile.
- Reorganization within the ATCO Group of Companies included the merger and restructuring of Canadian Western Natural Gas and Northwestern Utilities into two new entities: ATCO Gas and ATCO Pipelines. Three new ventures in energy marketing and services emerged: ATCO Singlepoint, ATCO Energy and ATCO I-Tek.
- ATCO Power commissioned the 180 MW Osborne cogeneration plant in South Australia.
- ATCO Structures returned to the Australian marketplace with the acquisition of a modular manufacturing and leasing company.
