Environment

At ATCO, achieving environmental stewardship goes beyond enacting policies. Throughout our global operations, we make every effort to minimize our environmental impact. From our hybrid-powered utility vehicles to constructing sustainable buildings and environmentally friendly power plants, we are committed to pursuing alternative energy technologies, including: cogeneration, hydro, geothermal and solar energy.

Across the ATCO Group of Companies, our commitment to protecting the environment drives us to be innovative and accountable in reducing our environmental impacts. The following are a few renewable and alternative energy solutions undertaken by ATCO:

ATCO Electric hybrid truck

ATCO Electric introduced the Alberta utility industry’s first hybrid maintenance vehicle to its fleet – a bucket truck that operates on electricity and diesel to significantly reduce the environmental impact of power line work.

ATCO Gas geothermal energy

ATCO Gas showcased its environmental leadership with the opening of three new environmentally friendly operations centres. The facilities use geothermal energy from within the earth’s crust. The operation centres mark another great milestone and raises the bar for sustainable building standards at ATCO.

Karratha Power Station in Australia

In Western Australia, ATCO built and operates one of the most energy efficient power generating plants in the region. The Karratha power station uses 35 per cent less natural gas compared to existing generation in the area, resulting in a 35 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

ATCO's South American joint venture

In Chile, Tecno Fast ATCO (ATCO's South American joint venture) installed solar panels at its manufacturing plant to provide hot water. More than 200 workers from the facility use the solar-heated water to shower.

ATCO Gas drake landing

In Okotoks, Alberta, the ATCO Gas Drake Landing solar project is the first solar community in the world to receive 80 per cent of its yearly space heating through solar energy. Drake Landing is the largest subdivision of energy efficient homes in Canada.
