Picture of the torchThe training is complete, qualifiers are determined and thousands of young Albertan athletes are now on their way to the 2018 Alberta Winter Games in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The Games officially get underway with the traditional ATCO Torch Relay, on Friday, February 16 at 2 pm in Fort McMurray.

We've been a part of the Alberta Games tradition for 30 years, and once again, relay runners will carry the distinctive torches with maple handles that were custom-made by our people.

The relay culminates at the Opening Ceremonies, Friday, February 16, 7 pm, at Shell Place where the final torch will ignite the ATCO cauldron, sparking the spirit of the Alberta Games. The flame is a symbol of harmony, goodwill and peace, and marks a special moment for the young athletes who have trained all year.

Beyond promoting sport and providing valuable competition experience for the thousands of Albertans who participate, the Games benefit host communities by leaving a legacy of experienced volunteers and upgraded facilities. The Games also feature several cultural and social events, showcasing the talents of Albertans in a wide range of activities.

Our support of the Games reflects our community investment priorities of supporting sports and recreation. The Alberta Games’ mandate also includes motivating Albertans of all ages to achieve a higher level of physical fitness through more active participation in sport and to pursue excellence.
