ATCO Australia’s two-year Gas Distribution Traineeship Program offers a thorough and immersive experience, blending organised coursework with hands-on skill development. Throughout the program, you’ll gain exposure to every facet of our company by working in the field, providing you with a complete understanding of our operations. By the end of the program, you’ll earn a Certificate III in Gas Industry Operations, marking your readiness to step into the role of a Gas Distribution Officer.

Who we’re looking for:
- Be at least 18 years old by June 30, 2025
- Have completed secondary schooling up to and including Year 10
- Hold or be eligible for a driver’s license
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident

Where you’ll work and train
- Launch at Jandakot: Begin your adventure at our vibrant Jandakot Depot in Perth’s south. As you level up through your traineeship, you might get the chance to explore other ATCO depots around Perth. We’ll keep you updated with plenty of notice!
- Team Up and Go: Begin your shift at your assigned ATCO depot, then travel to the job site with your crew. It's all about teamwork and adventure!
- Local and Regional Adventures: Most of your training will be in the Perth metro area, but you might also get to work at one of our regional depots. If that happens, we’ll give you a heads-up, cover your accommodation, and take care of travel expenses, according to our Gas Distribution Enterprise Agreement 2020 (details are on the Fair Work Commission website).
- Hands-On Training: Dive into theory and practical skills at our cutting-edge ATCO Training Facility in Jandakot, designed to set you up for success with Certificate III in Gas Industry Operations.
- Specialist Training: Occasionally, you might need extra training from a specialist external provider. No worries—it will all be conveniently located in the Perth metro area.

Will I receive a salary during the traineeship?
- Yes, you are paid for any time you undertake formal training.
- As an ATCO Trainee, you’ll start with a base salary of $50,462 plus 11.5% superannuation.
- By the end of your traineeship, you could be earning a base salary of $79,229.

Do I have to pay for the National Police Certificate and Pre-Employment medical assessment?
- ATCO will arrange and cover the costs for completing the National Police Certificate and pre-employment medical assessment.

Do I need to work away from home or travel for work?
- You will start work at our Jandakot Depot in Perth’s vibrant south.
- As you grow in your role, you might get to work out of other ATCO depots across Perth. Don’t worry; we’ll always give you a heads-up before making any changes.
- Each shift starts at your assigned ATCO depot, where you'll meet up with your crew before heading out to your worksite together—teamwork makes the dream work!
- Most of your work will be in the Perth metro area, but sometimes, adventure calls! If you need to head out to one of our regional depots, we’ve got you covered with accommodation, travel expenses, and plenty of notice. You’ll be rewarded as per the ATCO Gas Australia Enterprise Agreement 2022.

Will I receive a uniform and personal protective equipment (PPE)?
- Yes, you will be supplied with ATCO work shirts, safety boots, work trousers, and all other PPE required to ensure your safety in the position.

What’s the Work Environment Like?
- You’ll be working outdoors in all types of weather. Don’t worry; you’ll be equipped with high-quality clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to keep you safe and comfortable no matter the conditions.
- Your role will involve interacting with ATCO’s customers and the public. Sometimes, you’ll work on private properties, so presenting yourself professionally is key. Ensuring safety for yourself, your team, and our customers is a top priority.
- Be prepared for hard physical work, including manual digging, working in trenches, and lifting equipment. This role requires strength and stamina, so readiness for physical challenges is essential.
- You’ll be working outdoors in all types of weather. Don’t worry; you’ll be equipped with high-quality clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to keep you safe and comfortable no matter the conditions.

Do I need to provide my own tools?
- No, you are not required to purchase your own tools. All our vehicles and work trucks have the required tools and equipment.

What will be the hours of work?
- Generally, the hours are 37.5 hours per week, comprised of 7.9-hour days.
- We operate on a 19-day work cycle, with the 20th day taken as a rostered day off (RDO).
- When qualified, you will be required to participate in the on-call roster. You will be rostered for one out of every six to eight weeks.
- You will be paid an allowance while you are rostered on-call. When you are called out, you will be paid overtime rates.
- Generally, the hours are 37.5 hours per week, comprised of 7.9-hour days.

What will I be doing during the two-year traineeship program?
0-12 Months
- You'll embark on formal training modules designed to build a solid foundation in gas distribution.
- During this time, you'll engage in a rotational program to assist experienced Gas Distribution Officers aaoss diverse work streams, including Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, Replacement, and New Mains and Services. This varied exposure will equip you with a well-rounded understanding of the industry.
- In the field, you'll take on the role of the third person on the truck, actively participating in operations and learning from seasoned professionals. Simultaneously you'll begin your workplace \ assessment, setting the stage for your ongoing development and mastery of gas distribution.
12 - 24 Months
- As you advance through your rotational journey across all work streams, you'll begin to focus on a specific stream, enabling deeper engagement and the development of specialised expertise.
- During this phase, you'll take on more significant responsibilities, including being on call and 12 — 24 stepping into the role of Maintenance Assistant as the second person on the truck. This hands-on months experience will solidify your skills and confidence in your chosen area.
- Towards the end of this phase, you'll undergo a workplace assessment within your selected stream. Upon successful completion and subject to satisfactory performance, you will be awarded a Certificate Ill In Gas Industry Operations - a significant milestone in your professional journey.
- You'll embark on formal training modules designed to build a solid foundation in gas distribution.

What are my Leave Entitlements?
- 4 weeks of annual leave per year, accrued progressively.
- 10 days of personal (sick and carers) leave per year, accrued progressively.
- Long service leave of 13 weeks after 10 years of continuous employment.
- Cultural leave is also available.
- Compassionate and other leave is provided under the Fair Work Act and/or ATCO Gas Australia Pty Ltd Gas Distribution Enterprise Agreement 2022
- 4 weeks of annual leave per year, accrued progressively.
