ATCO Australia’s innovative H2 Home was designed to demonstrate the potential for carbon neutral energy systems that could potentially power the homes of the future.

The home is a residential demonstration facility located at our Jandakot depot in Western Australia. It is designed to replicate a typical Australian home and is equipped with hydrogen-powered appliances, solar-powered electricity and a hydrogen fuel cell providing round-the-clock power.

The house demonstrates the practical use of hydrogen in a real-world setting and showcases the benefits of adopting hydrogen as an energy source for homes.

One of the key advantages of hydrogen is its ability to produce energy without generating greenhouse gas emissions, making it a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuels. The H2 Home is connected to ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub, which uses electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then stored and distributed to the H2 Home, where it is used to fuel appliances and generate electricity.

We’ve collaborated with industry partners, AGIG, Electrolux, Fortescue Future Industries, Energy Networks Australia, The Australian Renewable Energy Agency, and the WA Government’s Renewable Hydrogen Fund to develop and test the hydrogen-power in the H2 Home. This collaboration has been crucial in addressing technical challenges and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of hydrogen-based systems.
