What is Renewable Hydrogen
Renewable hydrogen refers to hydrogen that is produced through the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, instead of using fossil fuels. The process of producing renewable hydrogen involves the use of an electrolyser that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity generated from renewable sources.
Renewable hydrogen is considered a clean and sustainable alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods, which often rely on natural gas or coal. It has the potential to play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in sectors such as transportation, industry, and power generation.
ATCO is also involved in the production of renewable hydrogen here in Western Australia. ATCO's Clean Energy Innovation Hub, located in Jandakot, Western Australia, is focused on the development of renewable hydrogen technologies.
The Clean Energy Innovation Hub is a demonstration facility that features a hydrogen refuelling station, a solar PV system, and an electrolysis system that produces renewable hydrogen. The facility is also testing the use of renewable hydrogen in various applications, such as fuel cells for powering cars, trucks and buses.
ATCO has partnered with Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) to develop renewable hydrogen projects in Western Australia. In 2021, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities for the production and use of renewable hydrogen in the state. Collaborating on the development of hydrogen infrastructure, including the production, storage, and transportation of renewable hydrogen.
Both companies are committed to the development of a renewable hydrogen industry in Western Australia, which has abundant renewable energy resources, such as wind and solar power. The partnership between the two companies will accelerate the deployment of renewable hydrogen technologies in the state as we transition to a low-carbon economy.
