Fremantle West End Replacement Project

  • Fremantle West End Replacement Project

WHY IS ATCO REPLACING GAS PIPELINES IN FREMANTLE?

ATCO is committed to maintaining our gas distribution network to the highest possible standard of safety and reliability. Part of this commitment involves the proactive replacement of network assets that are approaching the end of their useful life. Natural gas plays an important role in WA’s energy transition, and by replacing these end-of-life assets, we can ensure they remain safe and reliable to the network and customers for years to come.

ATCO uses technology (known as a Mains Replacement Prioritisation (MRP) Tool) to assess the condition of assets and identify any areas where a potential risk of leakage may exist as a result of factors such as pipeline age and exposure.

This proactive approach effectively prevents an increase in the number of leaks within the gas network, and also curbs the rise in Unaccounted-for Gas (UAFG). In this way, the program not only enhances network efficiency but also contributes to the reduction of UAFG and ensures the safety and reliability of the gas distribution system.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    • HOW WILL THE WORKS IMPACT ME?

If you live, work or attend venues near the construction areas, you may encounter traffic delays and some noise. More detail will be provided to those directly impacted as the works progress. You can also register your details using the form at the top of this page to receive important updates.

    • WILL THERE BE INTERRUPTIONS TO GAS SUPPLY?

Yes - Residents and/or businesses who are directly impacted by our works will be contacted separately.

    • WILL THERE BE IMPACTS TO TRAFFIC OR BUSINESS ACCESS?

We will use a low-impact technology (known as insertion) to minimise disruptions and complete the works as quickly as possible. However, due to the location of these works, full road closures are required at each stage of the works to ensure safe pedestrian access. Expect disruptions to traffic flow and parking in the areas indicated on the map.

Pedestrian and business access will be maintained wherever possible, and traffic management will be onsite for the duration of the project to ensure the safety of road users, pedestrians and personnel working on site. Please follow all directions from signage and traffic personnel.

    • WILL THERE BE ROAD CLOSURES?

Yes. As depicted in the map above, there will be road closures in place at each stage of the project to ensure the safety of road users, pedestrians and personnel working on site. Please follow all directions from signage and traffic personnel.

    • WILL THE WORK BE NOISY?

Construction noise during works is expected, but we will do everything we can to reduce the noise of the works and will work in accordance with noise management plans and council guidelines.

In most cases, works will be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 7pm. In the unlikely event that unplanned weekend or evening works are required, we will notify impacted businesses and residents in advance.

    • HOW WILL THE WORK BE DONE?

Our process involves using trenchless technology known as ‘insertion’, whereby a replacement pipe is inserted into the existing gas mains.

The trenchless method greatly reduces the time needed to complete works as well as reducing the impact to road users and businesses in the area. Traffic controllers will be onsite to ensure local traffic can move safely around the area.

    • HAS ATCO CONSIDERED THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AREA?

Having conducted similar works across the Fremantle area over recent years, ATCO is familiar with the heritage nature of the area and is committed to operating in a way that conserves this cultural heritage significance. We have engaged a specialist cultural heritage consultant ArchAus to provide our team with advice on the management of any historically significant artefacts encountered through the course of our works.
