What Is Renewable Hydrogen

Renewable hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, instead of fossil fuels. This process utilises an electrolyser to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, powered by electricity generated from renewable sources.

As a clean and sustainable alternative to conventional hydrogen production methods, which typically rely on non-renewable energy, renewable hydrogen has significant potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors, including transportation, heavy industry, and power generation. Additionally, it could help offset natural gas usage in homes and businesses.

Leading the way in Renewables

ATCO Australia's Clean Energy Innovation Hub

ATCO Australia's Clean Energy Innovation Hub, converts sunlight into solar energy, used to power the Jandakot facility. Excess energy is stored in batteries for use when the sun isn't shining. The remaining energy is used, with electricity purchased from the grid in addition to the purchase and surrender of large scale generation certificates (LGCs), to power an electrolyser that splits water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen with an electric charge. The oxygen is released and the hydrogen is stored and piped into the Hybrid Modular Home. Excess hydrogen is stored in a backup fuel cell, the rest is blended with natural gas.

ATCO Australia is also involved in the production of renewable hydrogen in Western Australia. Our Clean Energy Innovation Hub, located in Jandakot, Western Australia, is focused on the development of renewable hydrogen technologies.

The Clean Energy Innovation Hub is a demonstration facility that features a hydrogen refuelling station, a solar PV system, and an electrolysis system that produces renewable hydrogen. The hydrogen is produced using solar power produced topped up with grid electricity as required, with the purchase and surrender of LGCs. The facility is also testing the use of renewable hydrogen in various applications, such as for use in fuel cells for powering hydrogen vehicles, powering our on-site hydrogen powered residential demonstration home, as well as in blending up to 10% renewable hydrogen into the surrounding gas network.

The Clean Energy Innovation Hub received funding from ARENA as part of ARENA's Advancing Renewables Program. The Hydrogen Refueller Project and Hydrogen Blending Project both receive funding from the Renewable Hydrogen Fund as part of the WA Government's renewable Hydrogen Strategy. The Hydrogen Refuelling Station was a collaboration between ATCO Australia and Fortescue Future Industries (FFI)
