Barlow Solar

The Barlow solar project covers 61 hectares of former limited-use industrial land in Southeast Calgary, Alberta, and consists of 70,000 solar panels with a generating capacity of 31 MW (megawatts). The project produces enough power annually to power over 7,000 homes and offset 27,000 tonnes of carbon.

The Project

The Barlow solar project is one of the largest urban solar projects in Western Canada, covering 61 hectares of land. The completion of this significant project positions us as a top renewable energy producer.

The project, located near Barlow Trail and 114 Avenue in Southeast Calgary, Alberta, repurposes former limited-use industrial land and has a generating capacity of 31 MW of energy. The Barlow solar project produces enough power annually to power over 7,000 homes and offset 27,000 tonnes of carbon.

The solar facility consists of 70,000 bi-facial VSUN 540 watt photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, mounted on a fixed-tilt racking system, with ballasted concrete foundations to accommodate site conditions.

In addition to the solar panels and racking systems, the facility contains Sungrow SG3600UD-MV inverters, internal roads, weather station equipment, an electrical collector system, and transformers.

ATCO continues to make strides in renewable energy, not only by transitioning our portfolio but also by working with customers and communities to enable their own transition to lower-emitting sources of energy. The Barlow solar project exhibits the transition to sustainable energy for the people of Calgary and provides customers with sustainable energy alternatives.

The output of the project is not currently under contract and will be sold into the Alberta Power Pool.
