ATCO Excellence Awards: Mike Purnell
The ATCO Excellence Awards, ATCO’s annual peer-nominated recognition program, highlights the outstanding contributions of our teammates throughout the year. Colleagues nominate individuals or teams who showcase Excellence in one of the four award categories: Imagination & Innovation, Community Spirit, Health & Safety and Growth.
This year, the M.E. Southern Award for Community Spirit was presented to Mike Purnell, Senior Manager, Business Support Services, ATCO Frontec, in recognition of his unwavering commitment to caring. Mike regularly organizes Days of Caring events for his team as part of ATCO EPIC, including cooking meals at the Ronald McDonald House Calgary, helping at the Cerebral Palsy Kids bike clinic, and preparing to deliver toys to over 1,000 families in need around Calgary through The Magic of Christmas.
Mike inspires his team to actively support the community, encouraging initiatives such as an Alberta BC Guide Dog and Autism Support Dog training day at ATCO Park in Calgary and as the Employment Equity Advisory Committee (EEAC) Persons with Disabilities Champion at ATCO Frontec.
Beyond the workplace, Mike dedicates his time to various agencies with his family. He has coached basketball in the Calgary area for the last nine years, and has led a youth group for two decades, helping cultivate a sense of community, confidence, and resilience.
Mike was one of the few nominees to receive several nominations from his peers who celebrate and uphold his commitment to team-building, community service, and volunteerism.
Congratulations, Mike! Thank you for being a leader both at work and in the community.
