Celebrating Excellence

Our Stories

  • Celebrating Excellence at ATCO

“Going far beyond the call of duty. Doing more than others expect. This is what excellence is all about. It comes from striving, maintaining the highest standards, looking after the smallest detail and going the extra mile. Excellence means caring. It means making a special effort to do more.”

    - R.D. Southern, Founder, ATCO

ATCO’s Heart and Mind drives our approach to serving our customers and communities, and our pursuit of excellence governs the way we act and make decisions.

Every day, our people embody the ATCO Heart and Mind and pursue excellence in their interactions with customers, communities and colleagues.  Each year we recognize the incredible efforts and achievements of our employees with the ATCO Excellence Awards. We encourage colleagues to participate and nominate those individuals or teams who have demonstrated excellence in one of the four categories: Imagination & Innovation, Community Spirit, Health & Safety and Growth.

Now in its third year, we received 65 nominations from around the world from our people, recognizing their colleagues were doing amazing work. Take a look at the 2020 ATCO Excellence Award recipients below!

R.D. SOUTHERN AWARD FOR IMAGINATION & INNOVATION

    Daniel Blocksom-Presseau, Manager, Corporate Development

Working out of our corporate headquarters in Calgary, Dan has brought innovative, leading-edge ideas to help strengthen the business, and his work has directly influenced how our company will position ourselves to thrive in a changing world. In particular, Dan brought many new ideas about emerging technology or initiatives to his roles as part of the Navigating Our Future Agricultural Team and the Utility of the Future Team. His work has been adopted in many of our plans for the future and have also informed our company strategy.

G.P. KIEFER AWARD FOR HEALTH & SAFETY

    Darren Peterson, Gas Distribution Officer

Darren is recognized for his work in driving mental health in ATCO by creating and facilitating the formal mental health program, 'Take Charge' in ATCO Australia. After working in a fly-in/fly-out environment, Darren saw a number of colleagues who struggled with their mental health and often didn’t realize it. When he began his career with ATCO in Perth, Darren committed himself to creating a course to provide essential information for employees to bolster their own mental health.  Darren then took public speaking courses so that he could better deliver to course to those who were interested, and also took formal training so he could teach Mental Health First Aid to ATCO leaders.

M.E. SOUTHERN AWARD FOR COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Chris Nelson, Communications Technologist, Team Lead, Utilities-Electric

Chris is recognized for the immense volunteer and community contribution he makes to his home community of Fort McMurray, Alberta through the Royal Canadian Legion, Boys and Girls Club, and Junior A Games.  Chris, who is also the past president of Kinsmen Club, offers his time to all sorts of activities and fundraisers such as bingo and casino nights, 50/50 draws, score keeping, goal judging and much more!

    N.C. SOUTHERN AWARD FOR GROWTH

Ashley Engbloom, Senior Manager, Corporate Development

Ashley played a strategic role in enabling us to win the Puerto Rico project and form our new company, LUMA Energy. Ashley, who has recently moved from Calgary to San Juan, was instrumental in the pursuit, evaluation and bidding activities on this project, and her dedication, hard work and commercial evaluation allowed ATCO to bid and successfully close on this highly contested win! In true ATCO style, Ashley is known for going well beyond expectations and for having a strong work ethic.

    Congratulations to you all!
