ATCO is committed to developing and integrating renewable energy storage solutions with our solar facilities throughout Alberta. The Deerfoot, Barlow, and Empress solar facilities are under construction or already operating and total 103 MW (megawatts).
Forty Mile Solar
Current plans call for increasing wind-generated production at the newly acquired Forty Mile project in 2023, followed by the addition of 220 MW of solar power at the site. By 2026, the facility will provide clean, renewable power to the Alberta electricity grid and showcase the energy transition to the people in the province.
Deerfoot and Barlow Solar
The Deerfoot and Barlow solar farms make up the largest urban solar facility in Western Canada with 170,000 solar panels in total. Located within the city of Calgary, Alberta, and jointly owned by ATCO and the Chiniki and Goodstoney First Nations, the farms produce 37MW and 27MW of energy, respectively, which is enough to power more than 16,500 homes.
Empress Solar
The Empress solar project covers 280 acres of land and is located south of the village of Empress, Alberta. It has a generating capacity of 38.5 MW which is enough to power more than 11,000 homes.
