ATCO is committed to ensuring the safety, reliability, and resilience of our power and gas systems, keeping our customers? homes and businesses illuminated and warm. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events such as cold snaps and storms has prompted us to enhance our infrastructure and readiness. Our Climate Adaptation and Reliability team is focused on using advanced technologies and methods to monitor weather, detect system vulnerabilities, and improve asset resilience.
We prepare for winter through strategic measures including:
to identify potential issues in lines before they occur
to prevent tree-related power interruptions
to manage weather-related disruptions
like the installation of interphase spacers, to help withstand extreme cold conditions
During winter months, heavy snow and excessive ice buildup can lead to broken power lines, damaged poles, or even downed power lines.
Although we take steps to prevent service disruptions, being prepared for what to do before, during, and after an extreme weather event can greatly enhance your safety and well-being.

Natural gas continues to supply virtually all the space heating energy required in Alberta. Although the natural gas system has high reliability already, even in extreme cold, it takes a lot of work by many to:
to keep them from freezing
to react to changing conditions
after low gas pressure
Customers are free to purchase natural gas services or electricity services from a retailer of their choice. For a list of retailers, visit ucahelps.alberta.ca or call 310-4822 (toll free in Alberta).
