LUMA is our company formed with Quanta Services. LUMA competed against some of the largest utility providers in North America and the world and was selected by the Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnerships Authority to transform and operate Puerto Rico?s electric transmission and distribution (T&D) system. This historic win for ATCO and Canadian Utilities has proven that across our global enterprise, we deliver world-class energy solutions that far outpace our competitors.
The 15-year contract is to modernize and operate Puerto Rico?s 30,000-km electricity transmission and distribution system. By transforming the operations of the island's electricity system, damaged by hurricanes in 2017, the highly skilled employees of LUMA are committed to providing Puerto Ricans with improved quality of life and increased economic development for years to come.
The handover of operations from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, which was in bankruptcy at the time, occurred after a transition period during which LUMA completed countless regulatory, operational, safety and financial planning and readiness activities. LUMA has hired 4,000 employees to help create a resilient electricity delivery system for Puerto Rico.
The health and safety of our people and communities is a value shared across our enterprise. As part of this commitment, LUMA has opened a state-of-the-art lineworkers college in Puerto Rico?raising the standard of safety and training for LUMA employees and contributing to a safer electricity system for all.
The LUMA College for Technical Training is an accredited campus of the Northwest Lineman College (NLC), which currently has four campuses across the United States and trains more than 8,000 students each year. The college will provide a customized curriculum for the Puerto Rican workforce.
LUMA College?s 24-acre site in Canvanas includes an outdoor skills training field, indoor learning laboratory, administrative and classroom operations building, and covered equipment and personnel parking structures. Collectively, this has created approximately 22,000 square feet of usable building space for training, education and administration.
The LUMA College is now open which created approximately 50 jobs and up to 12 full-time employment opportunities, as well as jobs in security, janitorial, maintenance and information technology to support college operations.
With the scope of our national project, LUMA?s modernization and operation of Puerto Rico?s electrical system has provided for the employment of 4,000 people. This has directly benefitted local communities and economic development, as Puerto Rico continues to rebuild from the damage done by the hurricanes of 2017.
LUMA practices the culture of ?people first? and recognizes their great contribution to the performance of the company. LUMA is its people; people who work and do their best to achieve our goals of service to Puerto Rico.
