Energy Storage

In a journey towards a carbon neutral future, the demand for reliable and efficient energy storage technologies has never been greater. At ATCO EnPower, our long-life energy infrastructure assets are strategically located to offer our customers a reliable supply year-round. As we continue to develop and implement cutting-edge solutions, our aim is to move closer to a cleaner, brighter future where energy is abundant and accessible to all.

Natural Gas Storage

Natural gas continues to play a critical role in the energy transition by providing affordable and reliable energy for electricity generation, industrial use, residential and commercial heating. Like other energy sources, periods of supply and demand aren?t always aligned. ATCO EnPower?s natural gas storage assets at our Alberta Hub facility and Carbon storage facility provide the solution. Both facilities are connected to the natural gas transmission line (NGTL) system and make up over 20% of commercial natural gas storage capacity in Alberta.

Our reservoir natural gas storage product offerings are tailored to meet diverse customer requirements and play an important role in providing reliability by balancing natural gas supply and demand within Alberta. Natural gas storage will become even more essential with more development of renewable generation, LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) exports and a low carbon hydrogen economy.

Carbon and AB Hub

The Carbon and Alberta Hub natural gas storage facilities are located west of Drumheller, Alberta and northeast of Edson, Alberta, respectively. These facilities are located on different segments of the NGTL system, thus providing ATCO EnPower?s storage facilities with a unique advantage. The strategic positioning of these storage sites allows for enhanced flexibility in managing natural gas supply and demand across the region. ATCO EnPower believes in the importance of gas storage and the reliance that gas storage will grow with increasing supply and evolving demand from LNG exports and gas-powered generation.

Natural Gas Liquids

Located near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, our Heartland Energy Centre sits on 2,000 acres of land, providing energy storage, transportation and processing services, carbon sequestration, industrial water solutions, and hydrogen production. The location is ideal for access to pipelines, natural gas, and industrial water. The facility currently contains five underground salt caverns approximately 1850 meters below ground, each with a capacity to store 110,000 cubic meters of product. Products stored include propane, butane, and ethylene. ATCO EnPower?s land and mineral position at this location allows for tremendous growth potential with capacity for up to 40 caverns for storing natural gas liquids and hydrocarbon products.

Energy Infrastructure

The 2,000 acres of strategically located land holdings in the Alberta Industrial Heartland (AIH) provide customers with access to our full suite of services for both co-located and off-site solutions. Through on-site access to utility service options including natural gas, industrial water and power, our ATCO EnPower Heartland Energy Centre provides a compelling alternative for the siting of customer facilities.

Transportation and Pipelines

Within the AIH, our location makes it the premier choice for access to multiple transportation options (pipelines, rail, truck), solving the logistical challenge of getting products to key markets. Our existing and proposed connections to key transportation networks allow customers to move products freely between our facility and their critical distribution points. Our commitment to seamless connectivity means that you can count on timely deliveries and reduced transit times.
