2023 Arctic Winter Games Volunteer Program

The 2023 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) took place in the Wood Buffalo/Fort McMurray region from January 29 to February 4, 2023, and ATCO was pleased to be the official sponsor of the Volunteer Program and continue as a Legacy Sponsor of the Games.

ATCO’s legacy sponsorship of the Arctic Winter Games continues with the 2023 Volunteer Program, powered by ATCO. The Games took place in the Wood Buffalo region from January 29 to February 4, 2023.

The Arctic Winter Games is an international biennial celebration of circumpolar sports and culture, allowing participants the opportunity to shine in various cultural and sporting events. Powered by an estimated 2,000 people filling various volunteer roles before and after, the Games are sure to offer everybody taking part their Time to Shine.

In addition to the sponsorship of initiatives such as the Games, ATCO’s commitment to the North is exemplified throughout its rich history and work in providing clean energy opportunities and reducing the reliance on diesel in remote communities.

ATCO powers up the Volunteer Program and the Games

We recognize how important it is to have a strong volunteer base to hold events of this size and we know that the people of the Wood Buffalo and Fort McMurray area have stepped up to make these Games one of the best. We are also excited to have more than 25 per cent of our Gas and Electricity employees based in Fort McMurray join the 2,000+ dedicated volunteers at these Games.

Canada's largest off-grid solar & storage community - Fort Chipewyan, Alberta

ATCO is committed to providing clean energy and reducing the reliance on diesel in remote communities. Fort Chipewyan is a remote community home to 1,000 people who rely on diesel generation for their electricity, since they are not connected to the main Alberta power grid. Every year, diesel is transported by trucks on winter roads that are only open for a six-week period. The community was outgrowing the the existing diesel tanks and a sustainable solution was needed. Instead of adding more diesel tank storage, ATCO and Fort Chipewyan Indigenous Partners are installing the largest off-grid solar and storage microgrid project in Canada, reducing the community's reliance on diesel generation.

Old Crow Solar Project - Old Crow, Yukon

The small rural community of Old Crow with nearly 250 inhabitants lies 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the Yukon Territory. It’s over one hundred miles from any other community, is not connected to a major road system – or any road system at all – nor to any centralized energy grid. Its remote location has relied on diesel for its electricity needs. The fuel has to be flown in by planes and leads to some of the highest economic and ecological electricity costs in Canada.

Operating the North Warning System

If there's one thing ATCO Frontec understands, it's the extremes of the high arctic and working in one of the most severe environments on earth. The North demands strength of character, strength of community, adaptability, and determination. But we didn’t get there alone. Part of our success is our ability to work with people in the north, to co-venture with them with understanding and mutual respect. By building on established partnerships and working hand in hand with northern communities, we work together to provide goods and services as well as training and employment opportunities. Nasittuq Corporation is one of our hallmark partnerships that is majority Inuit owned, and has recently been awarded a new Government of Canada contract to provide in-service support for the North Warning System.

Ellesmere Island Operations & Maintenance - Alert, Nunavut

In 1994 we partnered with Pan Arctic Inuit Logistic Corporation to form a 50/50 joint venture called Nasittuq Corporation, and today it is an Inuit majority-owned commercial partnership. Nasittuq has been delivering site support services in this remote and harsh arctic environment with various contracts, and is currently responsible for operating and maintaining the 90 buildings comprising CFS Alert.

ATCO Two Rivers Lodge - Fort St. John, British Columbia

It takes a lot to get a building up. It takes just as much to keep it running. Fortunately, we’re here for both. BC Hydro’s Site C Clean Energy Project is a massive, 1,100-megawatt generating station that represents an equally large staffing challenge: 1,700 construction workers need a place to live. So we tackled it twice: first with a 757-module lodge complex, then with all the lodging and maintenance services required to keep it feeling like home. The resulting ATCO Two Rivers Lodge is three stories tall, but there are two stories that define it: the way we put it together and the way we keep it operating effectively.

Iqaluit Fuel Management Services

One of our longest joint-venture partnerships in Canada’s North, Uqsuq, has been operating and maintaining the Iqaluit bulk fuel storage facility and pipeline distribution system and the delivery of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, home heating fuel, AV-gasoline and Jet-A fuel. More than just the distance, other challenges that come with working in the remote North include the short timeline within which to transport products and perform outdoor work. Winter in Iqaluit ranges from -22C to -45C, hardly balmy, and accompanying windstorms and snowdrifts are certainly not conducive to regular shipments of goods, including fuel. To bring fuel to the city, we partnered with the Nunavut Petroleum Corporation in 1996 to form the UQSUQ partnership for the Iqaluit bulk fuel storage facility and pipeline distribution contract.
