THE PROJECT
Jointly owned by ATCO and Aamjiwnaang First Nation, the Adelaide wind power project consists of eighteen 2.3 MW (megawatt) wind turbines. The Siemens SWT 2.3-113 turbines have a 99.5 m (metre) hub height and 55 m blades and are located on privately-owned lands near Strathroy, in the Municipality of Adelaide Metcalf, Ontario.
The project has a generating capacity of 40 MW of energy, enough to power around 20,000 homes.
In addition to eighteen wind turbines, the wind power plant consists of meterological towers, an electrical collection system, a substation, and turbine access roads. ATCO acquired its ownership in the project from Suncor Energy in January 2023.
In July 2015, the Suncor Adelaide Wind Limited Partnership was announced, under which Aamjiwnaang First Nation has a 25 per cent interest in the Adelaide wind power project. The Adelaide wind farm provides ATCO, as project operator, the opportunity to be an active member of the local community for the life of the project.
The full output of the project is sold under long-term contract to the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), providing clean renewable power to the Ontario grid.
