Project Profile

  • BHP Jansen Discovery Lodge

    Comforts of home

A home is about more than the walls that enclose it – it’s about building a space that fits the people who depend on it. As the largest Canadian contract in our company’s history, the Jansen Discovery Lodge showcases how we work with clients and partners to create spaces that fit you.

The lodge features permanent accommodations for 2,586 workers at BHP Billiton’s Jansen Potash Project, with essential comforts like fitness facilities and theatre-style seating. Taken together, they’re home-like touches that demonstrate our commitment to collaboration, efficiency and comfort.

    Collaboration

Collaboration is the energy that fuels every one of our projects. We talk extensively with clients and engage uniquely talented employees and contractors in building and operating our facilities.

Creating the Jansen Discovery Lodge, for example, wouldn’t have been possible without joint-venture partnerships with the nearby George Gordon, Daystar and Kawacatoose First Nations. With local residents constructing and operating the facility alongside our expert staff, it’s the kind of mutually beneficial relationship that we’re proud to be a part of, creating sustainable working opportunities that work for everyone.

    Efficiency

Efficiency is essential to everything we do. By controlling all aspects of the projects’ development – design, building and operation – we could actively reduce costs.

We also installed high-efficiency furnaces for an efficiency rating of up to 98 per cent, and installed low-flow toilets, showerheads and faucet. And as multi-storey, modular building, the lodge requires a smaller footprint while making it possible to return the land to its original condition once operations end.

    Comfort

As with all our buildings, we’ve made every effort to create an environment designed to meet the needs of the residents who depend on it. The lodge’s dormitory rooms are well insulated against sound to protect precious nights’ sleep and equipped with individual air conditioning units to let residents precisely control their experience.

The lodge also includes a range of specialized rooms for improving workers’ comfort, including:

    • A library
    • A gym with raised running track
    • A hockey rink
    • A 200-seat theatre

Beyond the facilities, a lodge is only as good as the customer service within. We were also chosen as the provider of food services, housekeeping services, lodge management and maintenance for a streamlined guest experience and for an easy one-stop solution for our client.
