When faced with one of the largest natural disasters in Canadian history, the people of Fort McMurray displayed true courage, compassion and Alberta heart.
Last year, few could have imagined the terrible turn of events that would occur when winds shifted a raging wildfire towards the town. No one was prepared to suddenly abandon their belongings and leave their lives behind, but many were forced to flee as the flames quickly consumed homes, buildings and businesses.
One Year Later
One year later, much has happened to help heal the community, but a great deal of work remains as the community continues to rebuild.
We stood by the people of Fort McMurray, amid the smoke, flames and fear; offering shelter, support and safety. From the immediate emergency to welcoming residents home, we were there every step of the way - and we continue to stand by the community today.
Our people worked tirelessly to rebuild critical infrastructure and safely restore electricity and natural gas service so that residents could return home, but that was only the beginning. We are committed to creating healthy, thriving communities and over the last year we have focused our efforts on supporting construction, small businesses, education and community events to help families and businesses move forward.
Committed to the Community
We believe in the strength of Fort McMurray and we have faith that the community will emerge from this disaster, stronger and more vibrant than ever before. Throughout the last year, we have partnered with community organizations like Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild homes. We’ve also held special events like Christmas hay rides and kids curling bonspiels to bring some family fun to Fort McMurray.
Join Us this Evening for a Community Gathering
As the community gathers to reflect on the events of the last year, we will be hosting a BBQ at Snye Point Park on May 3 from 5-8 p.m. for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Community Gathering as we did last year when residents began to return home. We hope this event will provide the people of Fort McMurray with a place to connect with their neighbours, enjoy a hot meal and make new memories as the community rebuilds.
