• Careers at ATCO with Kylie Newton

Meet Kylie, ATCO General Manager of Human Resources. Having worked with ATCO for nearly ten years, Kylie has helped grow ATCO’s presence in Perth while retaining the family-feel of the organisation. We asked Kylie a few questions about her experience working at ATCO.

What is your role with ATCO?

I’m the General Manager of Human Resources here at ATCO Australia.

What appealed to you about working with ATCO?

When I started working at ATCO, the company had only just established its head office in Perth and had a small local presence (in addition to its Australian power assets). The thing that appealed to me was the fact that it was quite ‘green’ from an Australian HR perspective, although we still had the support of our big Canadian parent at the same time. I was excited about the opportunity of working with a global company. It was a very different industry than what I had been in previously and the fact that my role was likely to be important in building a local presence for ATCO was a challenge I wanted to meet.

What different roles have you had at ATCO?

When I started with the organisation I was a Senior Human Resource Business Partner. After a while, I moved to the operational arm of the business for our Gas Division, and took on a HR Manager role focused on employee relations and industrial relations. Some eighteen months/two years after that I moved back into the corporate head office role looking at strategic support for the General Manager Human Resources. Now I’m the General Manager, Human Resources and I’m currently leading a team of 11 permanent and fixed term staff covering all divisions of the business.

What makes ATCO a great place to work?

One of the things I love about ATCO and I think other people enjoy, is the people that we work with, which I respect is a fairly predictable response from a senior manager of HR. One of the other things I love is how collaborative we are, we work across all areas of our business, all departments and we come together when we’ve got a goal to achieve. We really are the true definition of a team.

I’ve had an incredible career with ATCO so far, and they’ve been incredibly supportive of my development. In my roles in the HR team I’ve been exposed to tasks and projects that I potentially wouldn’t have with another organisation. I have a great international connection with the people we work with as well, so for me it’s truly been a great career so far.

Do you think ATCO is a company that invests in its people?

I think now more so than ever. We’ve got a lot of focus on leadership development in our organisation and helping our people get the capabilities they need to support the changes in our industry, including those external to the business but also the changes that are happening internally. It’s a real focus for us to develop capability, support our people and to see them enjoy their careers and succeed.

What does ATCO’s tagline ‘One Company. Infinite Possibilities.’ mean to you?

ATCO started from pretty humble beginnings, and has since been on a truly inspiring journey. I think one of the exciting things about our business is how seriously it is looking at growth in Australia and globally. The marketplace is becoming more diverse and we are willing to take on that challenge. I think the infinite possibilities tag line is about that, it’s about all of us looking positively at the growth of ATCO in Australia and beyond and about the roles we can play in achieving that growth together

What are you most excited about in your role?

What really excited me about my role is that we never have a dull day in HR. Over the last nine years that I’ve been with the organisation, every year has been different, more varied in what we do and what we are keen to take on. I’ve got a fantastic team of people that are just bubbling with ideas about what we can do in the next few years for the people here, and I’m really excited to see where we can take it.

Which ATCO value means the most to you?

The value that always captured my interest was the caring one, and I think it’s because it’s so infinitely relatable. ATCO has a very strong commitment to community but also has great programs internally for our employees who would like to be involved in volunteering, making donations to charity of their choice, and really living and breathing our community involvement.
